Scientists create human cells directly from skin

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

skinTwo teams of British and Canadian scientists have created human cells directly from the skin of a patient, eliminating the need for embryos.

The results of the investigations of both teams, announced by the journal Nature, are an important step in the search for safe treatments for the replacement of damaged tissue of any part of the body.

Properly handled by the scientists, skin cells take on the properties of stem cells from embryos normally so they can become any tissue in the body.

Previously it was only possible to create these induced pluripotent stem cells (initials in English: iPS) using viruses to insert four genes that perform the reprogramming.

But the modified virus DNA in the cells so that increased the risk of cancer, so the technique was too risky for use in human patients.

Another danger that existed was that the changes caused by genes would lead to developmental abnormalities.

But now, scientists have managed to avoid the use of viruses and remove genes once they have fulfilled their task.

British and Canadian teams were able to insert four genes into a single segment of DNA to carry out the necessary reprogramming and then removed before they could cause damage.

Sunbathing die trying

Friday, June 18th, 2010

sunbathingKnowing how long you can spend in the sun, without running the risk of ultraviolet rays damage the skin, it is now possible thanks to a system that calculates the appropriate period of exposure to solar radiation, according to the skin of each person and the place where you are.

With this invention seeks to reduce the incidence of skin cancer. “The software determines the maximum recommended exposure to solar UV radiation, including the use of protective creams for people with different skin types displayed at any time and day of the year,” he told EFE Ruben Piacentini, director of Institute of Physics of the Argentina’s Rosario city (IFIR), which developed the project.

According to Argentine newspaper Infobae, the system can be installed on any computer and was created with the collaboration of researchers from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, Argentina and the Foundation Skin Cancer.

How to use

For information, the user must enter your skin type, the kind of surface you are (sand, water or cement), time of day and geographic location in which you, as the height or snow can increase the risk of radiation by 60 percent.

Physical Urticaria

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Physical urticariaUrticaria is the appearance of skin lesions with erythema (redness), formation of hives (elevated pale skin), and itching that can occur locally or widely throughout the body. Causal factor whose hives are the physical stimuli, heat, cold, scratching, pressure, etc … are the group that is called physical urticaria. Constitute the majority of known cause chronic hives.

Special Features

1. Are clinically measurable or quantifiable, because the stimuli that cause so are to play in the diagnosis.

2. They tend to be immediate (onset in minutes) and short (after an hour tend to disappear). As an exception we delayed pressure urticaria.

3. In the majority of cases are located at the site of stimulation.

4. They tend to be reproducible challenge test clinically well defined, which makes diagnosis and control. Physical Urticaria

5. They usually affect young adults, with a preference for females.

Burns and his Treatment

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

BurnsBurns are a specific type of soft tissue injury. Occurs when the body receives more energy (heat, chemical or electrical) than it can absorb without injury.

A severe burn can be life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. The severity of the burn depends on the temperature of the medium that caused and duration of exposure. They are primarily skin lesions, but sometimes affects other organs like lungs, heart, kidneys, etc.

The severity of burns is determined by five factors:

Depth of burn: 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade.
Extent of burn: Percentage of body area affected.
Condition critical regions: Hands, feet, face and genitals.
Patient age: Under 2 years old or very old.
Overall health of the individual.

Causes. What causes it and how is it produced?

Physical agents
Burns and his Treatment

Solid hot irons, stoves.
Boiling liquids: water, oil, coffee, etc..
Cold: Exposure to extremely low temperatures, local ice unprotected intermediate cooling sprays misused.
Fire, flames directly or solid waste.
Chemical
Gasoline and oil in general.
Acids: hydrochloric, sulfuric etc.
Alkali: Caustic soda, lime or carbide.
Electrical Agents
Electric shocks at different voltages: Cables, electrical appliances, plugs without protection, lightning.
Radioactive agents: solar rays, X rays, infrared radiation.
